Have you aerated and fertilized your lawn for the Fall?

It is important to aerate your lawn at least twice a year in the Denver/Parker CO. metro area. This has two purposes; alleviate thatch and soil compaction. We have a lot of clay and sandy soils that tend to get hard packed or compacted. This makes it difficult for air, water and nutrients to penetrate the soil and get down to the roots where it is needed. A lawn with a heavy thatch layer will feel spongy when you walk on it and is susceptible to attack from insects and disease. You need to poke holes through it by core aeration. The more the better for a lawn like this. Your lawn is the most receptive to utilizing a Fall feeding of fertilizer to encourage root growth through the Winter. Even though it goes dormant on the top side, the roots continue to grow and develop through the Winter. A healthy root system is essential for a healthy lawn. It also aids to an early Spring green up. A good winterizer is a 20-10-10 slow release granular fertilizer. For more lawn tips please go to
